The best kept beauty secret: Light and Laser!

Published February 27th, 2024

At Premier Dermatology, MD in Aventura, FL, we know that two keys to maintaining a youthful, natural look are 1) avoiding sun/use sunscreen and 2) stimulating collagen.    But what happens when there was too much sun exposure over the years, and now the skin is left with brown spots, fine lines, and a dull texture?

Enter lasers and light based treatments for the win!  Dr. Bilu Martin uses the Cynosue Icon platform that uses two devices: intense pulsed light (IPL), and the 1540 fractional non-ablative Erbium laser.   IPL uses wavelengths of light to specifically target melanin and hemoglobin.  Melanin is the pigment that forms sun spots and brown spots on the face.  Hemoglobin is the target in blood vessels, so IPl helps the small broken vessels seen in rosacea and sun damaged skin.  A series of treatments is recommended: three treatments a month apart.  After the treatment, brown spots will temporarily turn darker and then flake off for a few days. Dr. Bilu Martin uses IPL to treat the face, neck, chest, and hands.

The 1540 fractional non-ablative Erbium laser lays down microbeams of energy in zones, leaving normal skin in between the zones.  Healing comes in from the untreated zones to stimulate collagen.  This treatment improves fine lines and texture, as well as acne scars and surgical scars.  A series of treatments is needed for this laser as well.  There usually 2-3 days of redness and/or swelling.  To boost healing and collagen stimulation, the 1540 can be combined with PRP (platelet rich plasma).  Dr. Bilu Martin uses the 1540 laser on the face, neck, and chest.

Lasers and light based treatments are an important tool in the pdmd anti-aging toolbox, which includes: medical grade skincare, facials and peels with our aesthetician, Audrey, neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau), injectable fillers, collagen stimulators like Sculptra, PRP, Skin Pen, Aquagold, and Novathreads.  To see if laser and light treatments are right for you, call us at 305-521-8971.
